dpbhlAs tradition goes the defending Tier 2 Championship team squares off against the best of the best from our Fall program. Our 2011 Champions the Vaughan Red Wings had the opportunity to even the record of the Champions after the Polar Bears fell last year to the All-Stars. Matt Benjamin would get the start in the VRW goal as starter Anthony Ferrante was given the day off in preparation of the Premier playoff’s set to begin in two days. The Tier 2 All-Stars lead by Captain Jonathon Pulliccicchio would have their hands full as the VRW are in full flight after an entire season of Premier Ball Hockey under their belts.

The disappointing parts of these games are the no shows and the Tier 2 All Stars had five so there depth was defiantly taken away. The loss of Vic Azevado to a concussion was another huge loss to the squad so they were behind the eight ball before the game even began. John Ventullo was added to the squad at the last minute and gave the Tier 2 team nine forwards and five defencemen.

The VRW came out flying and it took nineteen seconds to gain the lead as Sam Renda the VRW leading scorer beats Franco Scipione of the Hitmen and the rout was on. Two minutes later on the PP Brian Rodrigues would double the score. By the nine minute mark of the first Steve Ceccanesse fires a pair and the lead is doubled to 4-0. Piero Petti of the Toronto Titans would make the score 4-1 as he beat Benjamin to narrow the deficit. The VRW would continue their dominance as Sam Renda fires two goals to complete his Hat trick the first in Downsview Park All-Star game history. Scott Roberts also of the Titans would score a late consolation goal to make the final 6-2 VRW.

The VRW would even the Tier 2 All-Star game series at one’s Champions 1, All-Stars 1. With arguably the Vaughan Red Wings biggest playoff series on the horizon the team came out and supported with twenty bodies ready to play. Even with the lopsided score the entire event was a success and all members had a great time. I would like to thank all the Tier 2 All-Star team and especially Pat Ventullo who stepped in to assist head coach Biaggio Zeppieri on one days notice. To the entire VRW club and Coach Pino Panza thank you for making the day the event it was. Congratulations to everyone who supported and attended the Tier 2 All-Star game gala.
